“ Foreigner, if you sail into Mithilene,
with her beautiful open landscapes, home of Saffo
that picked up flowers from the Graces,
over there, say that I was loved by Muses,
and Locrian land gave me birthdays,
And that my name is Nosside … Go!”

Nosside of Locri – IIIrd century B.C.

Nosside International is the only global poetry prize for unpublished works never awarded in other competitions, without borders for languages or means of communication, is part of the UNESCO World Poetry Directory and has been ranked in this year by the Wikipedia Encyclopedia among the 5 Major International Awards.
It is a global Project “made in Calabria” also because of its choice of symbols. In fact, it is dedicated to the female poet Nosside of Locri from III century B.C; its logo is a work by futurist master Umberto Boccioni from Reggio Calabria inspired by the classical Greek world, and is decorated by a creation of the goldsmith Gerardo Sacco from Crotone, given to the overall winner.
Participants at Nosside 2006 included male and female poets from 24 countries representing 4 continents (12 from Europe, 10 from the Americas, 1 from Africa and 1 from Oceania), presenting works in 19 languages from Reggian dialect to Amazon kari’ña language. The multilingual Anthology of the Prize – comprising the works of the Outright Winner, the Winners, the Special Mentioned and Mentioned authors - represented the poetic imagination in eleven languages in the 2006 edition.
The partnership agreement stipulated with CinemAvvenire Association guarantees the participation of Nosside-video winners to the prestigious Cinematographic Mostra of Venice and to Rome Film Festival.
This constant growth of Nosside Project firstly is the result of an almost utopian cultural strategy. This strategy is based on two identities: multilinguism (open to five official languages - Italian, English, Spanish, French and Portuguese – and to all the languages of the world, judged equally, regardless of type, be they national, original, or minority languages); and multimedia (access given to the poetic imagination in its diverse forms of expression, be they written, video or musical forms).
There is the ancient charm of the written language in the Written Poetry, the fascinating effect of video-images and computer design in the Video Poetry, the suggestion of music mixed with words in the Music Poetry.

“ Poetry… is much more important than factories.
They give us the possibility to live,
but poetry represents the desire
and power of life”

José Martí

Nosside is also the result of transparent judging methods (the Jury doesn’t see the names of contestants, but only assigned numbers and letters) that guarantee equal opportunities to all the poets without distinction in countries, continents, languages or race.
Finally, these results were made possible by the intensive work of a staff that have made this project their life. The “soul” of this laboratory is the Centro Studi Bosio (that, from 2005 has been one of three Italian members of the UNESCO Global Alliance for Cultural Diversities). The laboratory is also comprised of overall winners from past editions of the contest (called Nosside Ambassadors) and the members of International Jury.
Everyone works to diffuse throughout the world an intelligent, serious, creative and rich image of Reggio Calabria’s great attributes, the city - seat of project elaboration and promotion.
